Out of Egypt

and was there until the death of Herod, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying, “Out of Egypt I called My Son.”

Now you know my love of this verse. I spoke of it back when we were first getting into the genealogy of Christ. But guess what? I wasn’t completely accurate about the verse.

My understanding of it was that Jesus was going to Egypt, so that when the time had come, and Herod had died, that He would be called out of Egypt…, thereby fulfilling the prophecy at that point.

Then Leithart comes along and shows me the true meaning of the text. Or, should I say the true setting of the verse.

Jesus isn’t going to Egypt to be called out of Egypt. He IS IN Egypt while in Israel, and being called out of what Israel, and Jerusalem have become. In fleeing Israel, Jesus is being called out of Egypt.

Jesus is the firstfruits of the final, and greatest Exodus.
