Responses From Atheists

I posted my annual Happy Atheists Day as usual by posting Psalm 14 in its entirety on Friday. The psalmist starts by declaring, “a fool says in his heart, ‘there is no God.‘” Of course, I had to share my post on Twitter using the wonderful hashtag #atheists. Apparently, atheists gather together on such places and talk about how stupid Christians are. They are all up in arms that we would dare to raise our children as Christians, calling it child abuse, etc., never realizing they are guilty of the very thing they accuse us of, forcing our views onto them.

There are also a lot of accusations that we believe in fairy tales, fables, myths, etc., never realizing that Christ, the resurrection and events in the New and Old Testaments are rooted in actual history. There was actually a tomb, and it was actually empty after the resurrection. I’m sure they will say that it was all made up, but alas, when you look at what the Bible says about the resurrection, the disciples and the early church, those are not the kinds of events that are made up. For instance, had the disciples sat down to make up the religion known as Christianity, Peter would not have come off looking as bad as he did at times, and neither would the disciples.

Alas, all these things are lost on atheists. As the psalmist says, “a fool says in his heart, ‘there is not God.'” What this means is that atheists are fools morally. This is how the writers of the Old Testament viewed those who rejected the true and living God, as morally bankrupt. You can see this as you look at the psalm: They are corrupt, They have done abominable works, There is none who does good. These words explain the fool to us, and are the same words that the Apostle Paul uses in Romans 3:10-22 to show the total depravity of mankind. It is not as though Christians are free from these harsh truths. We too were once fools, until the Spirit moved in us and worked faith in our hearts so that we would believe the truth of Scripture.

However, Paul also writes about the fools who suppress the truth in all unrighteousness, telling us that they actually know God in a general sense, but refuse to give Him honor as all of creation is responsible for doing. These people become futile in their thoughts, their foolish hearts were darkened. Professing to be wise, they became fools…(Romans 1:21-22).  If you spend any time on the #atheists section of Twitter, you see this reality. In fact, just the responses I got from the atheists community showed me something about them that I never realized: they are really are not all that smart. For the longest time, I confess that I never wanted to engage atheists because I feared they would outsmart me. But alas, spend any time at all looking at their religious claims and you see these people are not deep thinkers, even though they accuse us of not thinking at all.

One atheist wrote: a fiction book says you’d be foolish not to believe its protagonist existed in real life & some idiots think its true. Her argument seems to be that the Bible is fiction, so if you believe it, then you must be an idiot. The problem is that even liberal scholars, who do not believe in Christ for salvation, readily admit that the events recorded in Scripture did take place and that the Bible is not fiction. Where events took place in the Old Testament, we find archaeological evidence supporting such events. Where they took place in the New, the same is true.

Another atheists said, So says the grownup who still believes in magic. No, actually, the Bible condemns magic and reveals to us a holy God who can bring about miracles as He sees fit. If the miracles are magic, then the burden of proof is on the atheists to duplicate the magic for us. Somehow, I don’t see any atheists walking on water any time soon, or better yet, rising from the grave.

A third atheists wrote: I’d like to see a not quote their … Oh hang, that would be a free thought! Wow, what an overly repetitive line. If you deal with atheists even on a surface level like I have, they will make this charge, showing that they are incapable of actual free thought themselves. This is right out of the Stupid Atheists Arguments Handbook.

The reason we do not quote anything but the Scripture is because there is no better source for truth to be found, since it is God’s word. I can quote over and over again Psalm 14:1, and it is never irrelevant because it is God’s word. God has declared to us the condition of the atheists and we would be fools to ignore His declaration. By thinking something other than God’s word, we are not moving into free thought, but continuing on with foolish and darkened hearts.

One of the final points an atheists made was that I was being un-Christlike by sharing God’s word with atheists (as if he knew the standard on what it is to be Christlike.) The sad reality is that there are many professing believers in our day who would readily agree. However, God’s word is what He uses to convert the soul, even the parts that show the lost they are condemned. In fact, it is always my contention that unless you show the lost that they are condemned sinners fully deserving God’s eternal wrath, then you can never really offer them good news. Good news without God’s law, just ends up stroking their already vile egos.

So let them hear the truth. That is what Peter did on the day of Pentecost when he told the men of Israel that they were a stiff-necked people. It is what Jesus did over and over again (think of the Temple cleansing events). It’s what Jonah did when God brought the Ninevites to Himself. The lost need to hear the bad news, before they can fully appreciate the good news.

  1. It is funny to me that atheists argue and debate about GOD when they say “there is no GOD”. Ecclesiastes 3:11 says “GOD has put eternity in their hearts” and Romans , chapter 1 says that no man is without excuse before the LORD for HE has revealed HIMSELF through nature and the creation.

Praise the LORD that HE showed me the truth and I am not an atheist. Therefore, I am not a fool !!!

      • “(H)ear these words: Jesus of Nazareth, a Man attested by God to you by miracles, wonders, and signs which God did through Him in your midst, as you yourselves also know— 23 Him, being delivered by the determined purpose and foreknowledge of God, you have taken[c] by lawless hands, have crucified, and put to death; 24 whom God raised up, having loosed the pains of death, because it was not possible that He should be held by it…
“Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 For the promise is to you and to your children, and to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God will call.”
