Albert Mohler has a great article about the demise of the Boy Scouts of America called A Requiem for the Boy Scouts. As you may know, the president of that organization, Robert Gates, announced that it would no longer keep in place the restriction that prevented gay men from being scout leaders. Gates did this strictly for practical reasons, not moral ones, according to Mohler. Mohler writes:
The Boy Scouts were doomed the moment the national leadership decided to preserve the organization at the cost of the values and ideals that gave it birth. Speaking to a national meeting of Boy Scouts of America leaders, President Robert Gates, former Secretary of Defense and former Director of the Central Intelligence Agency, called for the B.S.A. to abandon its policy of allowing the participation of openly gay scouts, but not the involvement of openly-gay adults.
Where I disagree with Mohler is more with his timing on the demise of the Scouts, not his arguments. He is correct in everything he says. Yet, when he says that the Boy Scouts are doomed because of this latest move he fails to recognize that the Scouts were already doomed due to their compromises that took place more than 50 years ago.
The Actual End of the BSA
I don’t know when it happened, but the moment that the Scouts started accepting non-Christians to its organization is the actual moment of its demise. When the Scouts decided to let in Mormons, Christian Scientists, Jehovah’s Witnesses and Islamists is when it became doomed. They were doomed at that moment because they accepted the premise that the Triune God was not the god to be honored or worshiped. The organization was saying that the gods of these other religions were the same as the Triune God found in Scripture. These other gods are not the same as the God of Scripture. When you fail on theology proper, showing that you do not know who the real God is, then you will fail on every other level as well. The Scouts did not hesitate in this area. Seeking to become more inclusive, they became more rebellious toward the God who is.
In allowing the cults to join the organization, they committed one of the most heinous sins found in Scripture, suppressing the truth in unrighteousness (Romans 1:18). The leadership of the Scouts were openly saying that it did not matter what god you worshiped, just as long as you worshiped a god that required some level of morality. The leaders of those four cults would all claim they were worshiping god with morality to follow. But God will have none of that. This is why He warns us in Romans 1 that those who suppress the truth in unrighteousness will not only have God’s wrath poured out upon them, but that they would also be given over to their depravity to the point that homosexuality is the end result. The most depraved condition in Scripture is now acceptable to an organization that, at one time, attempted to be morally straight.
But there is no moral straightness apart from Scripture. This organization was not founded upon Scripture or the gospel, but upon moralism that was a result of the gospel. In fact, the gospel was probably never all that welcome because at its core is the understanding that before a holy and just God we are helpless and in need of His mercy for any righteousness on our part at all. The Boy Scouts were more concerned with the boys pulling themselves up by their suspenders than they were in repentance, humility, and the fruits of the Spirit.
This is why the organization eventually found itself with those who were the most morally depraved in our society demanding entrance to the organization and having no moral ground to resist the call. They had long since punted any level of morality since they punted the Triune God of Scripture. No organization that is not rooted in Scripture can withstand this onslaught. Trust me, the Mormon church will be opening the doors to gay couples before long. In fact, every secular organization will fall to the gay agenda, if they haven’t already. Both the CIA and Texas A&M University have already fallen. Both were led by Robert Gates at one time. Given his lack of morality then, his lack of morality now should not surprise us.
But this is not the worst of it.
The Unattended Consequences of Gates Ruling
The BSA will become a breeding-ground for those in the gay community. You can bet the farm that gay scout leaders will be lining up to volunteer to work with those young and impressionable boys so that they can have their way with them. Remember, this is how most men end up being gay: they were molested by some man when they were younger. The claims made by the gay community that they were born that way have never been proven. Gays recruit by molesting younger boys, who grow up to be gay men. I’m sure the pedophile wing of the gay community will be out in full force once the change is made.
As for the claims that gay scout leaders would never molest a young teenage boy, realize that the gay scout leader is already morally bankrupt. He has already been compromised when it comes to his own personal sin. So please do not listen to their claims of some level of morality. They have none, according to Scripture.
As for true believers, we need to remember that Christ is our blessing, not organizations like the BSA. Yes, the BSA has a proud history, but it is still just an organization and part of the world. It is not the church. It is not held together by Christ’s word, and therefore, susceptible to corruption. The sad reality is that too many boast in the glory of the BSA never realizing that in doing so, they become idolatrous to something that was once good. In the end, the BSA is really nothing but a man-made institution, and should be considered as dung, in comparison to knowing Christ (Philippians 3:8).
I truly believe that all the institutions we hold dear to our hearts, be they the BSA, universities, social clubs, or whatever, will become bitter to the true believer because they are all part of the world system, a system that stands in direct contrast to the gospel and Christ. Christians are being confronted in this manner. Are we going to cling to Christ, or some man-made institution of the world? For me, the answer is easy. The BSA is dung, and to be considered as such, especially given their moral trajectory. It is not worth fighting for, but the gospel is worth fighting for. I will leave you with Paul’s words:
Yet indeed I also count all things loss for the excellence of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them as rubbish, that I may gain Christ (Philippians 3:8).
