My wife and I were studying in Jeremiah and we could not help but see the similarities between the days of Jeremiah and our days. It was out of our study that we began to wonder if the LORD would ever restore this nation, given that He brought so much judgment upon Israel, and our country has far fewer claims to God’s blessing than they did. It was at this point that she said, “I don’t see God restoring this nation. We’ve made an idol of the nation.”
I couldn’t help but agree. We are not saying that God cannot restore this nation, but we don’t believe that He is going to do so. There are far too many who idolize the good old U.S. of A. and no matter how much we want to convince ourselves that this country is the second coming of the Nation of Israel, it’s not. Yes, our country has rich, deep biblical roots and for many years had a moral standard not matched anywhere in the world. But given the fact that we have our roots in Biblical truth and have turned from those roots as a nation, seems all the more reason the LORD would give us over to judgment and wrath. We have squandered the blessings we had just as Israel did time and time again in the Old Testament.
It is at this point that many of you will start to say, “Yes, but if the church would just…” fill in the blank. It doesn’t matter what you say, you put the impetus of restoration of our country back on our shoulders, as if somehow, we were sovereign over the course of this nation. We, and I mean true believers living in this country, are completely helpless. For far too long we have fallen for the lie that our destiny lies on our shoulders, because we get the dubious honor of…voting. Really? Because we vote, we are somehow autonomous and can pick the course of our country and lives?
Others might want to make the claim that the course of this nation is ours because we are free. But this freedom does not extend to the human condition. We are free to choose as we please, but unless we are born again and made a new creation in Christ, we are slaves to sin and bound by our sinful hearts. So freedom is not what made this country great.
The truth is that if this country had any blessings at all, it is because those blessings were from God and God alone. Yes, we worked hard to get what we wanted, but He placed us in a nation with rich resources that allowed us to obtain great wealth. The problem with such is that we think we are entitled to such a life, entitled to such freedom, entitled to vote, and entitled to set the course of our nation. We are not entitled to anything.
I think as we survey the quickly eroding culture around us we can see that the course of this nation is not in our hands at all. I know that many will say: “Yes, it is in the hands of people who hate what our country stands for. If we could just get back to the founding fathers…” I ask again, really? Is this country really in the hands of people who hate it from the beginning and want to tear it down? Let’s assume the answer is “yes.” Well, who put those America-haters in control of our country? It was none other than God Himself. He is the One who raises up kings and disposes of them at will. He turns the heart of the king like He guides the course of the rivers, any way He wants them to go. So if this country is heading down the proverbial toilet, then it is because it is God’s will that it heads down the toilet.
I can only speculate the reasons for this taking place. As my wife said, we have turned the idea of this nation into idolatry. We hold it more dear to our hearts than we do the Kingdom of Heaven and the King. We think the chief end of man is pursuing the American Dream, which is nothing but an endless nightmare. We don’t like things like abortion or gay marriage, but we are not really willing to fight in any tangible way. We have bought into the idea that we can just keep electing the “right” people and it will all straighten out.
Newsflash: if you are not willing to truly fight, can we really expect people to back down? I’m not sure what that means, but I do know that we are beyond fighting for it in the court system and the halls of lawmakers across the country. After all, when we do pass laws against the tide of immorality, lawless courts just strike those laws down. Unless our elected officials are willing to impeach judges and presidents who rule and govern against the constitution, then this is what we can expect. But even then, I’m not sure that this would help.
All this to say, I don’t think the LORD is going to deliver this country from it’s moral spin into the sewage of history. We are truly at God’s mercy, which is exactly where we were all along, however unwilling we are to admit it.
