Bob Stoops Steps In IT

Oklahoma Sooners head coach Bob Stoops recently stepped in it by saying the SEC really wasn’t that great of a conference even though it has produced the National Champion the last seven years. Here is what the infinitely wise coach said:

Listen, they’ve had the best team in college football, meaning they’ve won the national championship. That doesn’t mean everything else is always the best.

So they’ve had the best team in college football. They haven’t had the whole conference. Because, again, half of ‘em haven’t done much at all. I’m just asking you. You tell me.

Texas Aggies Roundup That Matters

A&M Out of League?

I found this at The One-Point Safety, by Travis Normand. Apparently, Alabama fans were so confident that A&M would be waxed, that they had the following T-shirts made up proclaiming that A&M, being the newest member to the SEC, was out of it’s league.

This is way too funny. I’m sure the T-shirts will have plenty of value for Aggies, since the Aggies beat Alabama 29-24 and knocked them out of contention for the BCS National Title game. Can anyone say: pride goeth before the fall?

Johnny Football and the Hunt for the Heisman

After Johnny Manziel’s excellent performance against Alabama in the Aggies 29-24 victory over the number one ranked Crimson Tide, he is seriously being considered for the Heisman Trophy. Some have made the point that he is only a redshirt freshman, but since those who award the Heisman gave up on the unwritten rule that it should only go to upper classmen, by awarding it to Florida’s Tim Tebow in 2007, and Oklahoma’s Sam Bradford in 2008, then there is not reason that Manziel should be restricted from winning the award. If he is the best player, this year, in college football then it should go to him. That is what the award is for.

For those of you who don’t know much about him, watch the following video. It’s quite good.

Texas Aggies Football Schedule Thus Far!

I love all the “W‘s!”

BTW, the win against Alabama was head coach Kevin Sumlin’s 12th-consecutive road win dating back to his time with the Houston Cougars. For Aggie fans, you know that the number 12 is significant!!!

Let us hope that the Aggies add two more “W‘s” to the schedule for the regular season and another one in the bowl game to come.

I’m hoping that A&M takes care of Sam Houston State today quickly in order to give the first-string players a rest. But you can never tell for these smaller teams. They have nothing to lose in leaving it all on the field and can surprise you if you do not take them seriously.

Texas Aggies Beat Miss. State 38-13 and Go 7-2 Overall.

It was fun actually watching the game today as Texas A&M beat Mississippi State 38-13. So many of the games I’ve had to listen to on the internet because we do not get ESPNU on cable or internet. So it was good to see them play and watch the explosiveness of Johnny Football Manziel and company. Yes, he is a legit Heisman Candidate and should be even though he is a red-shirt freshman. The award goes to the best player in college for the year, not the best player who just happens to be an upper class man.

A&M ran more than 90 plays with their hurry-up offense, passing for a total of 357 yards, rushing for 361 yards and a total for 718 yards. Manziel was the leading rusher with 21 carries for 129 yards, and 2 TDs on the ground. He was also 30-36 for 336 yards and no picks. The only turnover came when Manziel dove for the end zone, breaking the plane, but fumbled once in, and the ruling on the field stood, even though it was obvious that he scored. O, the breaks of the game. But it didn’t matter as the number 16 Texas Aggies beat the number 15 Mississippi State Bulldogs.

We can expect A&M to jump up in the rankings sometime tomorrow as they improved to 7-2, over all and 4-2 in SEC play. They also moved into second place in the west, tied with LSU.

The Aggies face the Alabama Crimson Tide in Tuscaloosa next week. Just an interesting stat there. Head Coach Kevin Sumlin has an 11-game winning streak on the road going back last year when he was coaching for Houston. Let’s hope he turns that into a 12-game winning streak next Saturday.

I had several people ask me about the uniforms during the game, with MSU wearing all white, and the Aggies wearing all black with maroon trim. The Bulldogs were wearing the all white in honor of the last two times these teams met in the Independence Bowl in Shreveport, LA. The Bulldogs came from behind to win in overtime 43-41 in a blizzard, literally. The entire field was covered with snow, which is quite unusual for the Independence Bowl. The Bulldogs were trying to recapture that magic, but you can see from today’s score that wearing all white did nothing for them.

The Aggies, wearing all black, played as good as they can and controlled the game pretty much the entire time. Just for the record, I like the new unis, especially the helmut (see above). I wouldn’t mind the Aggies using these unis again.

Texas A&M Breaks into Top 25

After last night’s exciting win over Ol’ Miss, the Texas A&M Aggies jumped into the Top 25 for this first time this season, landing at No. 22 in the AP Top 25 and No. 21 in USA Today poll.

With the victory last night, the Aggies improved to 4-1 overall and they face No. 23/No. 24 Louisiana Tech next week in Shreveport, LA. This will be the second time they have faced a ranked opponent, the first time was against the Florida Gators who just slipped by the Aggies and remain unbeaten. Florida is currently No. 4/No. 6 in the polls after they defeated LSU this weekend.

LSU dropped in the polls after their loss to Florida (14-6) on Saturday and currently reside at No. 9/No. 8 in the rankings. A&M will host LSU in two weeks at Kyle Field in College Station, TX.

Congratulations to the Aggies and may they continue to win and surprise the rest of the SEC. AS Edward Aschoff at the ESPN SEC blog pointed out, everyone figured A&M would struggle as the new kid on the block, but it turns out that Missouri is the team that is truly struggling.

Texas A&M and Missouri couldn’t be any further apart: We all assumed that Texas A&M would be the team struggling in its new home. With a lot of roster movement and a new coaching staff, the Aggies were supposed to be playing catch-up in their first season in the SEC. Missouri, which had a lot of vets coming back and was supposedly loaded with explosive offensive talent, was going to really compete in the SEC East. Well, after six weeks, Texas A&M has become the darling of the league with a 2-1 SEC record, and Mizzou is now 0-3 in league play. Texas A&M is winning with a flashy offense and superb quarterback play, while the Tigers are losing because they are getting outmuscled and outplayed and can’t get consistent quarterback play. Mizzou now has to take on No. 1 Alabama, while the Aggies travel to Louisiana Tech before taking on LSU at home. A&M could really make things interesting with LSU.

Texas Aggies Come From Behind to Beat Ol’ Miss 30-27

I can’t tell you how proud I am that A&M pulled out the victory over Ol’ Miss tonight. I know, it’s Ol’ Miss, but you have to hand it to Johnny Manziel and the Aggies for pressing on despite six turnovers that seemed to stifle the Aggies at every turn. Yet, that didn’t stop them from pressing on and they managed to come from a 10-point deficit to win the game.

I have to admit, I was already finding ways to not let the defeat bother me. After all, this is what A&M is use to. But the “use to” didn’t come about and the Aggies won. It seems that head coach Kevin Sumlin has fully shaken the bad mojo that was left on the program from the Mike Sherman/Dennis Franchione days. Sumlin has taught the team how to win by coming from behind.

This was the Aggies first SEC road win. Now that is out of the way and they can press on for the rest of the season. I think it was Ol’ Miss’s 20th consecutive conference loss.

Here is what ESPN had about it:

The legend of Johnny Manziel continues to grow.

No, Texas A&M’s freshman quarterback was nowhere near as impressive as his 453 yards and three touchdowns in last week’s drubbing of Arkansas. In fact, he contributed to three of the Aggies six turnovers in Texas A&M’s 30-27 win against Ole Miss on Saturday night.

Manziel’s performance against the Rebels might have been more impressive, though — if not as statistically sound. Trailing 27-17 in the fourth quarter of the first SEC road game of his career, Manziel led Texas A&M on scoring drives of 88 and 39 yards in less than nine minutes to steal a 30-27 win from Ole Miss.

It looked for all the world that the Rebels had sealed their first SEC victory in more than two years when they recovered a muffed punt on Texas A&M’s 5-yard line in the last minute of the third quarter. Ole Miss quarterback Bo Wallace found wide receiver Donte Moncrief for a 4-yard touchdown two plays later, and the Rebels held what looked like an insurmountable 10-point lead.

Manziel didn’t do much to dispel that notion when he threw his second interception of the night on his first drive of the fourth quarter. Five minutes later the freshman came inches away from a safety when he was sacked near his own goal line. But the magic kicked in on 3rd-and-19 from the Aggies’ 3-yard line, when Manziel found Mike Evans for an improbable 32-yard gain.

Two plays later, Manziel darted around four Ole Miss defenders and raced 29 yards to a touchdown to cut the score to 27-23. Faced with giving the ball back to Manziel, Ole Miss coach Hugh Freeze opted to go for it on 4th-and-1 from his own 39 — a run the Aggies promptly stuffed.

From there, Manziel needed just four plays to find receiver Ryan Swope for a 20-yard touchdown and the lead with just 1:46 to play. Wallace, who threw for a career-high 305 yards on the night, could not hold serve on Ole Miss’ last-gasp drive, as he tossed his second pick of the night to the Aggies defense.

All told, Manziel threw for 191 yards and a score, and he provided 129 of the Aggies’ whopping 290 rushing yards. Since dropping the season opener to Florida, the freshman has led Texas A&M to a 4-1 record and a 2-1 mark in its new conference. Not too shabby.

Texas Aggies Barn

For years I have driven by this barn on Highway 6 between Waco and Hearn, Texas. I have watched year after year as each incoming class of Aggies changed the class year, but this is the first that I actually stopped and took a picture. This barn is a landmark to all those driving south on Highway 6. It’s the local Aggies way of letting you know that you are no longer in Baylor Nation (which covers all of Mc Lennan County). You’ve entered into Aggieland the moment you see this barn. More than that, you are now in SEC Country, where real football is played and the only place that it’s played on a regular basis in the great state of Texas.

Having the barn painted this way is real genius on the part of the land owner. The old Ag never has to paint his own barn. He just calls us the Corps of Cadets and lets them know the barn needs a new coat of paint, and the newest class comes on up and does the job for him. I would say that he is taking advantage of the Corps. But I don’t think the land owner uses the barn. I’ve never seen any tractors or hay next to it. I think the sole purpose of that barn is to let people know they have entered Aggieland. That is the spirit of Aggieland for ya. Gig ‘Em Aggies.

I hope that some 10 years from now, when Andy is driving on his way to A&M from Roswell, he remembers our stop at the Aggies Barn. By then it will say something like ’24 Whoop! Who knows, maybe Andy will be part of the Corps of Cadets that puts the latest coat of paint on the barn.

Some of you may think I’m being a bit presumptuous about Andy attending A&M. I admit… I am. I think he would enjoy it. But only the LORD knows what college will be the best for him when the time comes. It is fun sharing some of these things with Andy, and hopefully with Joey next year.

Countdown to NCAA Football Is On! Gig ‘Em Aggies

I really like what  Gene Wojciechowski has to say over at ESPN.com!

Where’s Aug. 30th when you really need it? Because after one of the most news-filled, often depressing offseasons in the history of college football, I’m ready to watch anything that doesn’t involve a Freeh report, a police report or a hospital report.

South Carolina at Vandy? Never been happier to see the Head Ball Coach throw his visor.

UTSA at South Alabama? At this point I’d watch the USDA play football.

Eastern Washington at Idaho? I couldn’t name you one player on either roster — and that’s OK.

What matters is that actual football is actually going to be played. And that means a welcome respite, however brief, from the mind-numbing news of the day.

For me, the wait for college football is two-fold. First, my Texas Aggies have joined the SEC and I’m excited about the prospects of the Aggies playing in the best conference in the nation. I know it’s going to be tough on the Aggies. It’s meant to be.

What the move has done has eliminated my argument that I made for years that A&M played too many candy-apple teams in non-conference play. You remember those games in which I lamented the fact that they were playing Arkansas State for the first game of the season? It’s a no win situation when you play such teams because if you win, it adds nothing to the prestige of your team, and if you lose, you suffer embarrassment for years.

O how could I have brought that up! It was the very first game for Mike Sherman as head coach, and quite a foreshadow of what would come for him as the head coach.

Our season this year starts on August 30th, just like it does for most other teams. The time, 6:30 p.m. central. The team: Louisiana Tech University. The place: Shreveport, LA.

Now, in seasons past I would complain about playing a team like Louisiana Tech. But not this  year. Given that A&M is in the best conference in the nation, have I said that already???, they have one of the toughest schedules in the nation. They can afford to play weaker teams now in non-conference play because in conference play includes games against Florida, LSU, Alabama, Arkansas, Missouri, Mississippi State, Ole’ Miss and Auburn. That is what happens when you play in the BEST conference in the nation.

The second reason I’m really excited about the season is that I bought two tickets to the South Carolina State game on September 22, and I’m taking Andy down to College Station to see the game. I wanted to get tickets to the Arkansas game, but did not for three reasons. The first, the tickets were twice the price as they were for the South Carolina State game. The second was that my father, who lives in Brenhan, TX (see the banner of this blog), was not going to be in town that weekend. I want to see him as well as go to the Aggies game. The third reason was that A&M should beat South Carolina State and it will be a lot more fun to see them win, than it will to risk a lost for Andy’s first game.

I can’t wait to go see the game. The last time I saw an A&M game was when they played Clemson back in the 2004 season. Andy was still in his mother’s womb at the time, but that didn’t keep us from going to the game. Every time A&M scored and the canon fired off in celebration, Andy kicked inside Elisa’s womb. It was a lot of fun. I’m hoping he is a natural Aggie.

How many days??? 17 days until football season starts. Gig ‘Em Aggies!

Texas A&M WINS 1999 Alamo Bowl 0-24!!!

Yes, you read that correctly. Due to the sanctions by the NCAA on the Penn State football program in which all victories were erased due to the corruption, A&M has won the Alamo Bowl from that time span, specifically, the 1999 Alamo Bowl. The Aggies played Penn State in the Alamo Bowl and because of the sanctions, they won 0-24.

OK, let me try and explain that again… the game that took place back in 1999, was actually won by Penn State  24-0, but since they have all their victories removed by the NCAA in the Sandusky scandal, the Aggies are now the winners of that game. They won by the score of 0-24.

Hhm? Are you have as much trouble with this as I am? Somehow, the Aggies get the win even though we didn’t score a point.

As for the other sanctions, I guess they are OK. A 4-year-bowl ban, reduction in scholarships, and a $60 million fine will have to do. I’m grateful that all current Penn State football players are free to transfer to other programs. See the full report here.

BTW, this improves the overall bowl record for the Aggies to 16-17, just a tad under .500. Interesting to note, that Wikipedia changes the table when I went back to double check it.

Well, not sure what to say to this conudrum. So… Gig ‘Em Aggies!

UPDATE: Apparently all scores are changed to 2-0. So the Aggies won the game, 2-0. That helps. Thanks Eric M. for the help with that one.

Congratulations Texas A&M University!!!

Today is the day that Texas A&M University becomes an official member of the Southeastern Conference! A&M is no longer a member of the Big 12, and is moving forward in joining the best athletic conference in the country, the SEC.

I can’t tell you how glad I am that this is taking place. I know it will be a challenge for the athletic program at A&M, but it sure beats sticking around in a conference that was run by the evil-burnt-orange empire known as t.u. I don’t care that we won’t be playing them any longer. That is fine with me. A&M has a much greater challenge in playing teams like Arkansas, Auburn, LSU, Alabama, Ole’ Miss, Mississippi State, South Carolina, Florida and host of other fine programs. It makes the season a lot more exciting and we don’t have to worry about our non-conference schedule being tough enough. In fact, Sports Nations has pointed out that A&M will have the toughest schedule in the country from late September to mid-November. That gets me excited.

Am I sad that A&M has left the Big 12? Not a bit. It was good while it lasted, but I’m glad its over. Texas A&M, welcome to the Southeastern Conference!

Watch both videos below. They will get your blood going! Gig ‘Em Aggies

The Day the Big 12 Died

I know we are only into early June, but I am looking forward to some Texas Aggie football in the fall. In view of that, I discovered the following video that has been around for a while, but new to me. It’s entitled the Day the Big 12 Died and is put to the tune of American Pie by Don McClean. If you know American Pie and SEC/Big 12 football at all, you will love all the references to both. Enjoy.

Also, Mike Tag has a great piece on the fact that Deloss Dodds, the athletic director for t.u., “can’t quit” Texas A&M. Ever since A&M up and bolted the Big 12 for the SEC, Dodds is acting like a spurned lover. He has to slam the SEC and A&M every chance he gets. It really makes me laugh. Dodds and the t-sips thought they ruled the roost for so long and to have A&M up and leave has this screaming like a brokenhearted school girl.

Mike writes:

Dodds cannot let it go. He simply cannot quit A&M. It is humorous to watch a school that for years has claimed that they were above a rivalry with A&M, try to get over the fact that the Aggies simply do not care about them anymore.

A&M coaches, players and fans are busy trying to figure out how they are going to beat LSU and Alabama on the field. Meanwhile the powers that be at Texas are acting like a lover scorned. A&M went and found a hotter, richer bride in the SEC and now Texas is busy trying to convince everyone that they never loved A&M in the first place.

Read the rest here.

I also would like to include this one as well, since it’s so exciting to watch.
